Afra White Top - Cynotilapia afra

They live in the central and northern part of Lake Malawi, in rocky environments. They can reach 10 cm in length. Males are territorial and feed on organisms accumulated on rocks, while those that live in schools tend to feed on plankton. Females hatch eggs in their mouths.

Hump-head - Cyrtocara moorii

They only live in Lake Malawi, in very shallow waters with a sandy bottom. Despite being calm, during breeding times, males become territorial, their body colors become more striking and females take care of their young, incubating them in their mouths. They feed on molluscs and crustaceans. They can reach a maximum size of 18 cm.

Malawi eyebiter - Dimidiochromis compressiceps

Found only in Lake Malawi, Africa, in shallow waters of more vegetated areas of the lake. They can reach 23 cm. It is a territorial species that feeds on small fish. Males dig shallow holes and court females, leading them to lay eggs there. The females incubate the eggs in their mouths and take care of the fry until they are released into schools among the vegetation.

Moorii - Gephyrochromis moorii

Found in Lake Malawi, Africa. It lives near sandy bottoms, at depths of up to 25 meters. Being in groups of 3 to 7 individuals, they can reach 12 cm in length. They do not establish a fixed territory but pursue males that are in the same feeding area.

Scrapermouth mbuna - Labeotropheus trewavasae

Found only in Lake Malawi, Africa. At a depth of up to 15 meters. They can reach 11 cm in length. They are territorial, and it is ideal for good coexistence to keep one male for five or six females. They have specialized teeth for scraping algae from rocks and also feed on small crustaceans and worms. The female incubates the eggs in her mouth, during this period their color becomes more striking, feeding does not occur and she becomes more aggressive.

Blue streak hap - Labidochromis caeruleus

Found in Lake Malawi, Africa. It lives in a harem, with about 5 females to 1 male. The female incubates the eggs in the mouth, in this period she does not feed and becomes more territorialist. They can reach 8 cm in length.

Venustus cichlid - Nimbochromis venustus

Found only in Lake Malawi, Africa. It lives on the sandy bottom, reaching a maximum depth of 23 meters, juveniles are seen in shallower waters and adults in deeper areas. They can reach a maximum size of 25 cm. They feed on small fish. Females of this species also incubate eggs in their mouths.

Nkhomo-benga peacock - Aulonocara baenschi

They live in areas with rocks scattered on a sandy bottom, in Lake Malawi, Africa. It feeds on molluscs and can reach 13 cm in length. The female incubates the eggs in her mouth and during this period she does not feed and becomes more territorial.

100x100

Lombardoi - Maylandia lombardoi

Found in Lake Malawi, Africa. In areas with sandy or muddy bottoms, at depths of up to 30 meters. It feeds on algae. It can reach 8 cm in length. They dig into the sandy bottom to lay eggs during breeding seasons.

100x100

Fenestratus - Protomelas fenestratus

Found only in Lake Malawi, Africa. It lives in sandy areas and rocky shores that accumulate a lot of sediment. Blowing away the sediments, they feed on algae and crustaceans. They can reach 14 cm in length, making it ideal to have one male for five to six females. The female incubates the eggs in her mouth and during this period she does not feed and becomes more territorial. After the offspring are born, the female continues to protect them by keeping them in her mouth.

100x100

Hornet cichlid - Pseudotropheus crabro

Found in Lake Malawi, Africa, near caves and rocks. At a depth of up to 18 meters. Its diet is very varied, being able to eat fish, molluscs and crustaceans. They can reach 9 cm in length.

100x100

Blue iceberg - Sciaenochromis fryeri

Found in Lake Malawi, Africa. It lives on rocky shores at depths of up to 40 meters. They can reach 11 cm in length. The male of this species imitates the foraging of the Mbuna, a cichlid that feeds on algae, to get closer to small fish and eat them. The females are difficult to see as they are hidden among rocks, and come out during the breeding season to lay their eggs in caves excavated in rocks by the males.
